ESIA11 - Engineering Structural Integrity Assessment: design, fabrication, operation and disposal
Manchester Conference Centre, Manchester, UK
24-25 May 2011
Dr Andrew Sherry, Director, Dalton Nuclear Institute, UK, chaired ESIA11, the eleventh and most recent of FESI's series of international conferences on Engineering Structural Integrity Assessment.
ESIA examined how, in a financial climate where there is increasing pressure on organisations to deliver economic advantages for both customers and investors, it is possible to safely operate and maintain plant, systems structures and components, increase outputs while decreasing costs, and at the same time improve the longevity of design life.
The many issues surrounding these extraordinarily complex and seemingly contradictory challenges were explored during the two day meeting, with reference to existing plant as well as to their impact on design and new build. Discussions included lessons on the intelligent management of life extension and reliability, and the application of new ESI technologies and methodologies.
Speakers and presenters comprised world experts in the field of ESI, including Professor John Knott, Birmingham University, UK, Professor Shang-Tung Tu, East China University, Shanghai, PRC, Dr Andrew Sherry, Dalton Nuclear Institute, Manchester, UK, Dr Alan Turnbull, National Physical Laboratory, Buxton, UK, Professor Peter Flewitt, Bristol University, and Professor Su Jun Wu, Beihang University, Beijing, PRC.
The conference programme included the following Keynote and Invited presentations:
| Ensuring Integrity Throughout Life | Keynote | John Knott Birmingham University, UK |
| Structural Integrity Monitoring of High Temperature Components | Keynote | Shang-Tung Tu East China University, PRC |
| The Value of Surveillance Schemes for Supporting Safe Operation of Nuclear Plant | Invited | Peter Flewitt Bristol University, UK |
| The Point Pleasant Bridge Failure | Invited | Kim Wallin VTT, Finland |
| Nuclear Manufacturing | Keynote | Andrew Sherry Dalton Nuclear Institute, UK |
| Impact of the Environment on the Structural Integrity of Steam Turbines | Keynote | Alan Turnbull National Physical Laboratory, UK |
| Fatigue Behaviour of High Temperature Alloys | Keynote | Su Jun Wu Beihang University, PRC |
The conference reflected a truly international ESI presence, with speakers and delegates from as far afield as India, Greece, Finland, Russia, and of course the Chinese ESI community.
The Keith Miller Student Award for the best student paper given at the ESIA Conference was won by Bo Chen of Bristol University. The quality of the student papers given at ESIA11 was agreed to be excellent.
The Conference Banquet, organised by FESI's CEO Poul Gosney, was based on a traditional British menu for the benefit of the overseas delegates, with courses of English Lamb and an old-fashioned Trifle pudding. Banqueters were entertained firstly by Dr Brian Tomkins, FESI's Chairman, the designated after-dinner speaker, and secondly and unexpectedly by Professor John Knot
ESIA was held in association with Beihang University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Beijing, PRC, and the Chinese Consortium of Structural Integrity Engineers and Scientists.
